MAN OF THE MATCH:Shane Watson
All—rounder Shane Watson hit a record 15 sixes — and an equal number of fours — in his blistering 185 not out as Australia posted a nine—wicket victory against Bangladesh in the second One—day International here Monday.
With the win, Australia took an unassailable 2—0 lead in the three match series.
Watson broke the record of West Indies’ Xavier Marshall, who hit 12 sixes against Canada in 2008.
The opening batsman was in ominous form as he also struck 15 fours in his 96—ball innings.
This means he scored a phenomenal 150 runs off just 30 balls and the remaining 66 balls he faced fetched him 35 runs.
Watson, with his devastating knock here, also surpassed the highest score by an Australian in ODIs. Matthew Hayden’s 181 not out against New Zealand at Hamilton in 2007 was the previous best.
It was Watson’s sixth ODI hundred and it came of just 69 balls, the third fastest by an Australian.
Opener Shane Watson hammered a record-breaking 185 to help Australia beat Bangladesh by nine wickets in their second one-day international and secure victory in the series on Monday.
His unbeaten innings came off only 96 balls, including a world record 15 sixes and as many boundaries. It helped give Australia an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Watson broke the world record for most sixes in an ODI innings, set at 12 by West Indies' Xavier Marshall and also broke Matthew Hayden's record of 181 as the highest ODI score by an Australian.
Chasing Bangladesh's 229-7 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Watson and former skipper Ricky Ponting took Australia to 232-1 in just 26 overs to secure victory.
After the match, Watson said: "It is one of those days when everything works out and luck played a part too. I was not aware of the world record. I just did not want to run too much. After getting to a hundred we just thought of limiting the running and hit a few boundaries. When there is not too much bounce or turn, it is easier to execute the big shots. Opening has been the best thing to happen to me, in Test cricket too. You get to face the best bowlers."
Earlier, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shahriar Nafees scored half centuries Monday as Bangladesh reached 229 for seven.
Rahim led the scoring with an unbeaten 81 from 80 balls, containing nine boundaries and a six, after going to the crease with Bangladesh in serious trouble at 65-4 after winning the toss and batting. Nafees contributed 56 from 68 balls before he was caught-and-bowled by Steve Smith.
Fatigue in hot and humid conditions persuaded Shane Watson to take the aerial route and hit as many balls over the boundary rope as he could during his world record breaking one-day innings of 185 not out.
Watson struck 15 sixes in the second one-day international against Bangladesh to break the previous record of 12 set by West Indian Xavier Marshall three years ago against Canada.
His innings is also the highest one-day innings by an Australian, surpassing Matthew Hayden's 181 against New Zealand in 2007
"It's just one of those days where everything that you try comes out of the middle of the bat, a mishit goes into the gap or you get dropped," Watson told reporters.
"I got to a point where I got pretty tired, it was hot and humid out there so I didn't really want to have to run too much."
"I was either going to try to hit as many sixes as I could or get out because I was pretty tired, that was as simple as it was," he said.
Watson said he had not targeted Hayden's record.
"I don't know exactly how many balls Matt Hayden faced," he said. "In the end I'm not playing to try to break records or anything like that, I'm just trying to back myself and if it comes off like it did today then it's brilliant.
"As I walked off I thought I was close to Matt Hayden. I actually played in the game and got 60 in the game Matt Hayden got 181. It's nice everything came off for me today."
Former captain Ricky Ponting, who watched from the other end during an unbroken second-wicket partnership of 170, praised his partner. Ponting was unbeaten on 37 as Australia reached their victory target from only 26 overs.
"(He) made my job easy," Ponting said. "I just had to get a single to give him the strike. No one expected it to get over that fast."
"I have been lucky to play with some great players, Watto has played some great innings...this was an amazing innings."
"Some of those sixes would have cleared any boundary in the world. It probably won't sink into us for a while how good that was."
